Data Governance: Reframed for Better Participation

The ask, propose some ideas for improved data governance. However, before jumping in and tackling governance itself, let’s ask Copilot for a more high-level definition:

With Copilot’s definition in mind, is there an underlying organizational resistance to data governance? Generally, no. Everyone understands its importance and agrees that it could be improved upon. Rather, there’s a problem with participation, like any group project. The problem is likely the word “governance.” It scares people. When they hear “governance,” they often imagine that their job going to become unnecessarily more difficult.

So, what’s the suggestion? Though simple, maybe rebrand the “data governance” initiative. Maybe bounce around some ideas with stakeholders and decide on a less scary phrase. Instead of “Data Governance,” how about “Data Reliability“? Everyone wants their data to be reliable. Fewer want their data governed. The mission didn’t change, but the initiative became more welcoming. It doesn’t read like more work.

Conclusion:
Sometimes a simple change can have profound impacts. You may be surprised how many people become supportive of your initiatives just because the project name didn’t sound like work. When it sounds like work, people who are already working hard are less likely to volunteer for additional work. However, when the initiative sounds less “worky”, people are more likely to raise their hands and participate.
