Power Automate: Microsoft’s “Rube Goldberg Machine”

The Microsoft 365 suite is a collection of cloud-based solutions:

  • Outlook Online,
  • SharePoint Online,
  • Microsoft Teams,
  • etc.

Also included in this ensemble is Power Automate, Microsoft’s workflow solution. Power Automate flows can use dozens (and dozens) of connectors to link both Microsoft and non-Microsoft solutions into automated processes:

  • Twitter
  • Asana
  • MailChimp
  • YouTube
  • Salesforce
  • etc.

Essentially, an action triggers the process, then a series of actions are initiated as tasks. These workflows can be simple or complex, but they’re are completely customizable…

Sample Workflow #1:

Post a message in Microsoft Teams when an email is received in Outlook.

Sample Workflow #2:

Get notified once Microsoft Forms receives a submission and the results are copied to a SharePoint Online list.

Sample Workflow #3:

Once a day, review open Microsoft Planner task items and email the task owners. Afterwards, post an update to the group’s Slack channel.

Conclusion:
There are Power Automate templates available, but the solution fosters flexibility. Create custom workflows with unique combinations of linked solutions…
